Meeting of minds
Professor Sohan Jheeta, member of our Central Yorkshire local section, reports from our joint public lecture with the Institute of Physics, highlighting research at the interface of chemistry, biology and physics.
At the November 2016 joint public lecture held at the University of Leeds, Professor Peter Weightman from the department of physics at the University of Liverpool, gave a lecture on his research into ‘Real time measurements of conformational change in proteins’.
Whilst there has been considerable progress in the determination of the structures of biological molecules using techniques like x-ray diffraction, there has been very little progress in obtaining information in real time on the conformational changes in such molecules as the human flavoprotein cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR).
CPR is an electron transfer flavoprotein that plays a vital role in cell metabolism and in living systems is anchored to the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum – a component of cells that is responsible for protein transport. It carries out its electron transfer function by large changes in the relative orientation of two structural domains of the protein: the flavin mononucleotide binding domains. Prof Weightman reported the first real time measurements of the conformation of the flavin domains induced by electron transfer reactions. Such conformational changes could give some insight into the early electron transfer systems involved during the origins of life on Earth.
Attendee Dr Brian Grievson, from the University of York, said, “Professor Weightman delivered an excellent inter-disciplinary talk which allowed me to dive into the world of constantly changing protein structure and conformations. The opportunity to chat over refreshments with a wide circle of scientists from different backgrounds was a bonus and very satisfying. I eagerly await similar events in the future."
Dr Christine Rogers, visiting professor at the University of Leeds, highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge across subject areas, commenting, “This forum provides a great opportunity for debating topics that span several branches of science; the fresh perspective of another discipline can sometimes lead to an “eureka moment" and lead to lively debate.”
