Annual Huddersfield photography competition
Our Huddersfield and District Local Section has announced the winners of their photo competition entitled 'Captivating Chemistry'.
First, second and prize winners were chosen from a total of around 30 entries. The top three entries received cash prizes of £200, £100 and £50 with an additional prize (£50) for the best student entry.
First prize – Viola Previtali
First prize went to Viola Previtali, a fourth year PhD student from Trinity College Dublin, for her photograph entitled “Chemistry universe: Sun in a round-bottomed flask”.
Second prize – Thanuja Galhena
Second prize went to Thanuja Galhena, for her image entitled "Lacework of Graphene", which is a SEM image of a cross section of reduced graphene oxide paper. Thanuja is a resaerch associate at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.
Third prize – Akash Ratnayaka
Third prize went to Akash Ratnayaka, for his image entitled "Structurally ordered spherical polymer resin". Akash is a PhD student at Loughborough University.
Student prize – Samaiyah Kola
Finally, the student prize went to Samaiyah Kola, from Greenhead College in Huddersfield, for her photograph entitled "Va-rainbow-um – the oxidation states of Vanadium".
