Chemistry is for life... not just for Christmas
Chemistry Week
On Friday 24 November students from four secondary schools in rural Cornwall took part in a series of fun workshops designed to show that chemistry is everywhere and forever.
The activities included 3D printing, crime scene chemistry, and how to control an oil slick. The day finished with a spectacular Whizz Bang science show by Wonderstruck.
The day was organised by Rachel Delourme, manager of the Cornwall Education Business Partnership, assisted by STEM ambassadors and education coordinator Kate Whetter. The workshops were delivered by volunteers from various organisations, who all came to share their expertise and enthusiasm for chemistry.
Rachel said: "I really enjoy organising these days because the children get very excited and they can learn about lots of jobs in chemistry."
Kate explains, "Rural Cornwall is quite a deprived area, so it’s so important to raise children’s aspirations. The event went extremely well and it was great just to see the children’s faces. They were really buzzing in the school today. Children were rushing back from lunch to get front seats in the final chemistry show!"
Schools Careers Coordinator James Worthington added: “Rachel has done a fantastic job in bringing all these different people to our school. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students, who wouldn't normally have the chance to participate in such activities. It's been a wonderful experience, appreciated by all staff and students."
The organisations taking part included Cornwall College, 3D Kernow, Falmouth Marine School, Truro College, STEM ambassadors and Wonderstruck Science Shows. Schoolchildren attended from Brannel, Penrice, Poltair and Roseland secondary schools.
Chemistry Week
Chemistry Week is an annual celebration of the chemical sciences, centred around our members sharing their passion with public audiences. In 2017 it took place from 20–26 November, and the theme was 'Global Science'. Members were able to apply for grants from our Outreach Fund to organise activities.
