Global challenges and 'Pointless' chemistry
Chemistry Week
As part this year's Chemistry Week the RSC Liverpool Local Section held an evening event for its members aligned with the week's theme of 'Global Science'. Murray Brown, of the local section committee, reports.
The evening, held on 22 November, comprised an informal talk given by Professor Roy Alexander from the University of Chester on Ashton-Hayes, Cheshire's carbon neutral village project, followed by a hot buffet and an entertaining pub-style quiz.
The quiz had five round of questions, loosely based on the Royal Society of Chemistry’s global science themes: environment, energy, food, health and water. There was also a ‘Pointless’ chemistry round.
About 35 members attended the event, with a diverse mix of people drawn from local colleges and universities, industry, and retired members.
The event was organised by myself and fellow committee member Alison Savage. Sandy Johnson, our honorary secretary, was the mastermind who devised the entertaining & challenging quiz.
Prizes were award to the top two teams – each team member getting a Royal Society of Chemistry colour changing mug, pen and USB stick, plus a choice of a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine. The winning team came from Liverpool John Moores University.
Chemistry Week
Chemistry Week is an annual celebration of the chemical sciences, centred around our members sharing their passion with public audiences. In 2017 it took place from 20–26 November, and the theme was 'Global Science'. Members were able to apply for grants from our Outreach Fund to organise activities.
