Chemistry outreach in York
During the half-term holidays on 1–2 June, local Royal Society of Chemistry members participated in an interactive science event on a busy shopping street, right in the heart of York.
The ‘Discovery Zone’ tent allowed visitors an unexpected insight into science as they were shopping!
Led by local Education Coordinator Dr Joanna Buckley, the members helped to busk some of her ‘Edible Experiments’ to over 2000 people.
Busking inside the tent and on the street allowed a real cross-section of the general public to find out the chemistry behind some of their favourite sweet treats.
The event received fantastic feedback from all concerned and the members involved were wonderful advocates for chemistry. Their enthusiasm and passion was infectious and they truly helped to inspire future generations of chemists.
