Chemistry in Sheffield
Some enthusiastic member volunteers engaged the general public with chemistry at outreach events in Sheffield.

Discovery Night – Friday 15 March
The University of Sheffield's laboratories and lecture theatres were opened to the public for an evening of science for the whole family. From talks and exciting demonstrations to hands on activities, there was an abundance of fun science activities for children and adults alike.
On our interactive chemistry stand, members of the public found out how they could turn their kitchens into laboratories, courtesy of our kitchen chemistry demos. From making sherbet and some intriguing forensic detective work, to experimenting with indicators and testing your sense of smell, there was something for everyone!
Colourful Chemistry – Saturday 16 March
In Sheffield's Winter Gardens in the heart of the city, members of Sheffield and District's Local Section shared their passion for chemistry. The general public loved all the fun, interactive and colour-themed activities on offer, including making gooey slime, exploring how pens aren't always what they appear, how many colours are needed to make a single sweet and how hydrogen cars work.
To celebrate and highlight the importance of #IYPT2019, there were opportunities to make and take a personalised keyring, magnet and greetings card; everyone loved getting crafty with chemistry!
