Deccan Local Section inspires science teachers
On 20 and 21 June, the Deccan Local Section held a two-day chemistry-focused workshop for science teachers in Hyderabad, India. The event was organised in collaboration with the Sri Satya Sai Vidya Vihar (SSVV) high school, and was attended by nearly 40 teachers from 31 schools.
The workshop was designed to expand non-chemistry science teachers’ chemical knowledge and to provide the confidence and skills necessary to deliver inspiring lessons to their students. Through first-hand experience of practical chemistry the Local Section hoped to enable teachers to adapt a more interactive approach in the classroom.
The school’s trust chairman Ranga Rao and the Director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Dr Lakshmi Kantham, opened the event, which included both seminars and practical sessions. The interactive demonstrations allowed the attendees to reinforce their theoretical learning with hands-on chemistry.
The workshop inspired an interest to learn and teach chemistry “even in those with a physics background”, as one teacher said. Another teacher, Mrs Leelavathi from the SSVV high school, pronounced: “It’s an innovative programme, I enjoyed it like a small child”.
