Connecting organic chemists in the regions
It has been a busy start to the year for the members of the Organic Division. Since January, we have supported six organic chemistry meetings that were attended by over 770 chemists. Covering the UK and Ireland, meetings took place in Oxford, Cambridge, Hull, Nottingham, Dublin and Manchester. And before the end of the year, one of the Division’s longest-running meetings, which is now in its 43rd instalment, will be held in Glasgow.
A focus on networking
Each of these one-day meetings is organised by the host institution and includes talks from both academic and industrial researchers from around that region. “The meetings provide an excellent way for researchers in a region to meet and network with each other, and to hear progress in organic chemistry research,” says Ray Jones, Organic Division president.
Ray outlined that “a key feature that distinguishes these meetings is the opportunity for early career researchers, namely younger academics and post-docs, to present their work in talks, and for postgraduate students to present posters.” In recent years, the meetings have also included plenary lectures from one of our recent RSC Prize and Award winners, presenting a perfect opportunity to present them with their awards.
Looking ahead
Working with our members, we aim to hold another set of meetings in every region across the UK and Ireland throughout early 2015. To find out about opportunities to attend a meeting in your region, keep an eye out for future updates from the Organic Division
