Molecular oncology lecture series kicks off at Burlington House
In May, Dr Mike Waring, Principal Scientist and Associate Science Director in Medicinal Chemistry at AstraZeneca in Alderley Park, presented his inaugural RSC Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Sector (BMCS) lecture. His presentation titled ‘Molecular oncology – past, present and future of anti-cancer drug design’ was part of our public lecture series at Burlington House.
In his talk, Mike described the discovery of effective anti-cancer drugs, which represents one of the greatest challenges society faces. Although we have made great progress in both our understanding and our ability to discover new treatments, we still face significant challenges. The lecture showcased how some of today’s recognised drugs were discovered and how modern medicinal chemistry approaches have been applied to discover new treatments, which show great promise for the future.
As the recipient of the 2013 RSC BMCS Lectureship Award, Mike will present up to five more lectures at locations throughout the UK. The BMCS initiated the award to stimulate interest and awareness among the general public of the role of medicinal chemistry in the discovery of life-saving new medicines and to inspire the next generation of young chemists.
