Submissions now open

Deadline: 28 February 2026
Guest Editors: Reinhard Lipowsky, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces
Motomu Tanaka, University of Heidelberg

This themed collection covers a wide range of emerging topics related to biomembranes and biointerfaces. These topics include:

  • Asymmetric bilayer membranes
  • Molecular dynamics simulations of lipid bilayers and nanovesicles
  • Production of giant vesicles using microfluidics
  • Structure and dynamics of biomembranes and biointerfaces probed by super-resolution light microscopy, grazing incidence scattering and neutron spin echo methods
  • Interactions of membranes with condensate droplets
  • Topological transformations by membrane fission and fusion
  • Glycocalyx, the polysaccharide coat of cell membranes

This themed collection is dedicated to the memory of Erich Sackmann.

Manuscripts should be submitted via the Royal Society of Chemistry’s online submission service. Please add a “note to the editor” in the submission form when you submit your manuscript which includes the themed collection name.

The Editorial Office reserves the right to check suitability of submissions in relation to the scope of the collection and inclusion of accepted articles in the collection is not guaranteed. All manuscripts will be subject to the journal's usual peer review process. Accepted manuscripts will be added to the online collection as soon as they are online and they will be published in a regular issue of Soft Matter.
