A-level and AS-level results 2016
Thousands of chemistry students across the UK have now received their A-level and AS-level results.
Our president, Professor Sir John Holman says: "My congratulations to everybody celebrating your results and to the teachers who helped you achieve your goals.
"I wish you the best of luck as you take your next steps, whether that is continuing your education at university or college, or starting an apprenticeship."
In line with predictions, there has been a 13.7% decrease in the total number of students taking the reformed AS-levels. Chemistry was one of the ten subjects to see the biggest drop, with 16.2% fewer students taking the exam.
Professor Holman continues: "This year’s results are complicated and it’s too early to say whether the fall at AS-level may be a concern. We will continue to monitor participation and results, while supporting teachers and students to achieve their potential."
At A-level, the number of students achieving grade A* in chemistry fell by 1%, in line with a decline in those getting the highest grade in all subjects. This is in contrast to AS-level, where there was a 1.3% increase in the number of chemistry students getting the top A grade.
As in previous years, the number of girls and boys taking the subject was well-balanced. "I am particularly pleased to see that chemistry continues to attract a roughly equal number of girls and boys,” said Professor Holman.
"We want our community to be inclusive and diverse at every level, and we are committed to helping young chemists make the most of their talents."
