Chemistry in Gibraltar
Chemistry Week 2018
Dr Joanna Buckley was invited to Gibraltar to speak to students about her passion for food chemistry.
During the workshops, Jo shared some unusual chemistry behind common foods. Playing with your food is usually frowned upon, but it’s actively encouraged in this case! During the 12 different workshops, Jo invited students to experiment with different flavours before everyone taking part in a mass-participation taste test.
Spending a day at Bayside School (boys’ comprehensive school) then Westside (girls’ comprehensive school), Jo spoke to over 850 students (years 9–13) and staff at the schools, sharing her love of some weird and wonderful chemistry. She also gave careers talks to the older students, highlighting what studying chemistry at university is really like and where a career in chemistry can take you.
Chemistry Week
Chemistry Week is an annual celebration of the chemical sciences, centred around our members sharing their passion with public audiences. In 2018 it took place from 19–25 November, and the theme was 'Chemistry for Everyone'. Members were able to apply for grants from our Outreach Fund to organise activities.
