Spotlight on funding and grants in 2019
By Katie Springham
Each year, hundreds of you access funding and grants through your Royal Society of Chemistry membership. In our 2018 member survey you told us that you value our funding and grants not just on a personal level but for those that work with you as well. This spotlight looks at how you can celebrate chemistry, get where you need to be, and deliver your research – all with the help of Royal Society of Chemistry funding and grants.
Outreach and International Year of the Periodic Table funding
Outreach and International Year of the Periodic Table funding
As a third of you told us you wanted to volunteer for us in our 2018 Member survey, we thought it would be great to provide some funding for our Members and member-run groups to run some chemistry-based public and schools engagement activities during the International Year of the Periodic Table.
Throughout 2019, our members, affiliated ChemSocs at universities and Learn Chemistry Partnership schools can apply for grants of up to £500 to celebrate chemistry. We will be running a rolling application process throughout 2019, and the next deadline for applications is 14 January 2019.
Our member networks (local sections, interest groups, international sections and science divisions) can get involved too, and we have grants of up to £1,000 to fund committees to develop and execute a programme of activities to celebrate chemistry. Again, we are running a rolling application process and the next deadline is 14 January 2019.
For those applicants that are considering running bigger projects or multiple events to celebrate IYPT, then don't forget our Outreach Fund can offer small grants of up to £2,000 and large grants of up to £10,000. Applications for small grants run on a rolling basis and large grant applications open this month.

Travel grants
We offer both competitive and non-competitive travel grants to PhD students and Early Career scientists looking to attend a scientific conference or workshop. To be eligible for either type of grant, you must first be a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
For those looking to attend an RSC-run event, you may be entitled to a non-competitive grant of up to £200. These grants are given on a first-come-first-served-basis and you must be attending one of our eligible meetings.
Members can also apply to one of our Divisions for a competitive travel grant for any scientific conference anywhere in the world. We can offer up to £200 to travel domestically, up to £400 for continental travel and up to £800 for intercontinental travel for those applicants giving an oral or poster presentation.
We consider applications for competitive grants on a monthly basis, and applications close at the end of each month. We advise applicants to submit their applications as early as possible, and in the month that is at least 8 weeks before the event you wish to attend.
For more details, as well as the application forms for the non-competitive and competitive grants please visit our travel grants page.
Research grants
We offer seven different types of grant and bursary to our members looking to receive funding for their research. From the Undergraduate Research Bursaries to our ever-popular Researcher Mobility Grant, we have a wide range of funding available for our members to choose from.
One such grant we offer our members is the Research Fund, where applicants can apply for up to £4,000 to purchase chemicals and/or equipment for their research project. The fund supports research that has a high scientific or societal impact and that cannot be funded through other mainstream sources. It is available to our members at universities, colleges or research institutes.
The next round of applications for the Research Fund opens in the summer of 2019.
